David Wright Show Us What You Got Tonight

28mets-1_600.jpg

                                          Minaya/Sterling presents,

                                            “See Me in St. Lucie”

As Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez works on his mechanics in Florida the fifth starter in the rotation once again proves to be another of baseball’s legion of understudy’s with a combined record of 8-17 (Jorge Sosa, 7-5 as a starter).

The fact that MLB’s scheduling department creates a six-day workweek in the summer months and forces teams to play thirteen games at a clip in September showed its wear and tear on the NL East division leading New York Mets last night.

With an uneventful loss, third baseman David Wright performed a public exorcism of not only the powerful mite of the second place Philadelphia Phillies but of the spirit of the city itself.  The new mayor of brotherly love Charlie (…bear) Manuel decided to flaunt his bridges and sacrifice the first of four games which make up the most important series of his coaching career, in the clubhouse stuffing his face with cheese steaks.  The extravaganza of Citizens Bank with its supermodel ball girls and its towering home runs to left field make for an interesting setting. With Phillie Fanatics begging for detachment from the haunting vowels of migrated Mets fans. The New York Mets, destined to touch the Liberty Bell at season’s end, was delayed and stood still at Port Authority station.

Last night’s game gave us no JOSE JOSE JOSE and we have awaken from a dream that this we be the “Lastings” we’ll see of Milledge.  I hope to see Endy Chavez tonight starting in right field no disrespect towards Shawn Green but he can start on Thursday when Philadelphia’s Kyle Lohse is scheduled to pitch.

Tonight’s Mets starter Tom Glavine must understand that win #302 is just as important as win #300. Let’s go Tom its time to show Utley and Howard what hall of fame left-handed pitching is all about.

ERASURE @ MacCarren Park Pool

200px-erasure_album.jpg

I was genuinely thrilled to be invited and saw Erasure for the first time giving me the opportunity to participate in my first pilgrimage to McCarren Park Pool.  The anticipation grew as we stood outside something reminiscent of Warsaw, Poland in the midst of a heat wave.  With the six o’clock hour among us, all hundred of the absolutely adoring fans stormed to the front of the stage hoping to get a glimpse of Erasure’s Andy Bell.

Suspended diamonds floated through a series of  flat screens and costume designs centered on camouflage and the three primary iridescent colors of hot pink, bright orange, and green.  Erasure commanded their priceless post-punk pop anthems; A Little Respect, Chains of Love, and L’Amour, bringing even the straightest man to his knees. With an endearing love, Bell serenaded us with the help of his trusty partner, Vince Clark and three charming back-up singers.  The concert on a whole was great and graciously reminded me of those last few formidable years before going off to college.

As for the “Pool”, I was impressed with the amount of rent-a-johns and janes there were.  All of them were located across from one of the more interesting sights inside this Brooklyn landmark, apparently what was once the deep-end now covered with dirt, still possessed the platform for a diving board.  It was an impressive image that reminded me of past city lore when young swimmers would surge into the refreshing cool waters during a hot summer day.

As for the food and refreshments, the selections were minimal and the same rules applied with respect to most venues.  No outside beverages.  A bottle of Jack Daniels, I understand, but a bottle of H2O?  Hope they fix those hand wash stations.  Hate to say it.

Oh well I did leave satisfied knowing that McCarren Park Pool is still in operation acting as a refuge for many locals to tame their summer beast.
